When A Root Canal Might Be Necessary

Root canals have a bad reputation but the belief that the procedure causes unbearable pain is outdated. Your dentists in Burlington, and Jericho, VT, Dr. Paul Dunkling and Dr. Greg Penney, perform root canals with the most up-to-date equipment and techniques at Dunkling and Penney Dentistry.

What's A Root Canal?

First, it's helpful to know basic tooth anatomy to know the source of pain behind a root canal.

The surface of your teeth is protected by the tooth's enamel, creating a solid barrier. Beneath the enamel is called the dentin layer, and when this layer is exposed from loss of enamel, you become more vulnerable to tooth sensitivity. When cold or hot substances come in contact with the dentin layer, you'll likely feel pain in the tooth.

Under the dentin layer is where your nerves and blood vessels are found, which is referred to as the pulp. At the base of your tooth root (below the gums) is the cementum, a ligament that is partially responsible for keeping your teeth in place with the jawbone.

When the pulp inside of your tooth becomes infected or irritated, a root canal is then necessary to extract the afflicted pulp.

Why Receive Root Canal Treatment?

The human body is remarkable and fully capable of healing itself in certain circumstances, but not in the case of the unhealthy tooth pulp. Untreated pulp infections can result in a dental abscess, where the infected pulp develops into a pocket of pus, often leading to further issues in both the mouth and even the rest of your body.

A good indication of needing a root canal will probably be undeniable and your Burlington, and Jericho, VT, dentists encourage you to recognize the following symptoms:

  • persistent pain or pressure in your mouth
  • notable swelling of your gums
  • bumps (known as a fistula) on your gums
  • abrupt and severe pain when eating
  • increased sensitivity to hot and cold foods or beverages
  • discoloration (deepen in color) of the gums

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's reasonable to assume you will need to receive treatment right away.

Prevent Pain And Save Your Tooth

Contrary to belief, a root canal isn't more uncomfortable than a tooth filling, considering the use of an anesthetic agent, the infected tooth and surrounding area is effectively numbed. Upon receiving a root canal, you can expect the procedure to prevent any further damage to your tooth.

If you're unsure about the pain you're experiencing and whether or not you require a root canal, your Burlington, and Jericho, VT, dentists, Dr. Dunkling and Dr. Penney, encourage you to visit with them as soon as possible.
