Cavities and gum disease do not have to become commonplace. Stop these issues in their tracks.
There are so many issues that can affect the appearance and health of your smile. Luckily, you have a lot of say when it comes to your oral health. Our Burlington and Jericho, VT, dentists, Dr. Paul Dunkling and Dr. Greg Penney, proffer up some ways to keep your teeth and gums in great shape.
Brush and Floss
Yes, you probably know that brushing and flossing are necessary to keeping your teeth and gums healthy and safe from infection, decay or other issues. Of course, despite knowing this so many people decide not to brush or floss as often as they should. Brushing twice a day will prevent food from sitting on teeth all day long (brushing between meals is also highly encouraged) and flossing right before bed will ensure that food and plaque is removed from between teeth.
Consume Healthy Foods
While most people know that eating healthy is important for maintaining good general health it is also important for giving your teeth, gums and jawbone the nutrients they need. By staying away from carb-rich foods that contain sugars and starches such as cereals, soda, cakes, candy and bread and replacing these foods with healthy alternatives (fruits and vegetables are your friends!) you will reduce your chances of tooth decay.
While public drinking water in many regions contain the proper amount of fluoride that you need it’s never a bad idea to also used fluoridated toothpaste. Why? Fluoride is one element that is important for maintaining strong tooth enamel. When sugar and starches are turned into acid this acid can eat away at enamel and weaken it. Fluoride works to restrengthen it.
